The La Trobe Leaders Program is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your leadership skills by welcoming incoming students, mentoring your peers and participating in a range of engagement activities held on campus throughout the semester.

The program is a yearlong commitment which has 2 intakes per year, aimed at supporting both Semester 1 and Semester 2.

Residential Leader Program students will receive automatic recognition for completion of the La Trobe Leaders Program.

What do La Trobe Leaders do?

La Trobe Leaders are valuable members of the La Trobe community. Participation in the program involves engagement with activities in three core pillars. Leaders must participate in all three pillars across one year to receive recognition of completion of the program.

Pillar 1: Student Welcome

Activities may include:

  • Answer questions during orientation and early weeks of semester
  • Leading campus tours during orientation and early weeks of semester
  • Hosting virtual social hours in early weeks of semester
  • Providing an early welcome for prospective students at Open Day and transition events

Pillar 2: Student Engagement

Activities may include:

  • Supporting in-semester engagement activities and events (virtual and/or in person)
  • Participating in University celebrations and events such as RU OK Day, Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, and Harmony Week
  • Participating in graduation events
  • Leading campus tours held outside “welcome” times across the year

Pillar 3: Student Mentorship

Activities may include:

  • Discipline-based peer-to-peer support
    • Providing support at orientation activities
    • Hosting virtual and/or face-to-face meetups
    • Sharing experiences as a mentor by contributing to MyLaTrobe content
  • Leveraging connections with academics and Student Advisors to engage and guide students once classes commence
  • Connect with students at on campus engagement events

What are the benefits of being a La Trobe Leader?

  • You’ll have access to guest speakers, networking, industry mentors, employability and careers support
  • You’ll receive a Certificate of Completion once you have satisfied all requirements
  • You’ll have “La Trobe Leaders Program” formally recognised on your academic transcript
  • Students who participate across all three La Trobe Leadership pillars will be eligible for the Career Ready Advantage Silver award
  • La Trobe Leaders will have priority application status for casual employment opportunities that become available across the Student Experience teams

Students in the La Trobe Leaders Program will also receive exclusive, priority invitation to participate in students-as-partners activities including:

  • School Level Advisory Groups (SAGS)
  • Other representative and governance related activities (interview panels and university sub - committees)
  • Student panels and guest speaker invitations
  • Student forum participation
  • User testing to provide feedback on student facing systems and processes
