INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

BCH2IBM

2021

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Biochemistry is a field of science that describes the molecules and interactions that underlie biological systems and life itself. This field is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is leveraged in biomedical research and the biotechnology industry. In BCH2IBM, students are introduced to the chemical and cellular basis for life, the blueprint for which is encoded in DNA. The subject will cover processes govern DNA replication, transcription and translation, prior to examining the structure and function of proteins. A broader overview of cellular structure and operation will also be examined through discussion of lipids, membranes and signalling mechanisms. Laboratory techniques commonly utilised in biochemistry and molecular biology; including PCR, manipulation of recombinant DNA, separation and identification of proteins, will be introduced through practical activities. This subject lays the foundation for the study of metabolism in Metabolic Biochemistry and Cell Biology (BCH2MBC).
