Subject outline

In this subject, students will develop a practitioner's knowledge and skills to deliver high quality dementia care. Dementia is examined using a multidimensional approach, which is designed to encourage interdisciplinary practice. Content focuses on biological, social and psychological aspects of care, as well as specific clinical treatments and interventions. Therapeutic relationships and carer health are also considered.

02. Demonstrate an understanding of the diagnostic process, including differential diagnoses.
03. Demonstrate an understanding of treatment and intervention options
04. Discuss the social and lifestyle issues which may arise for the person with dementia, their family/carers
05. Describe the impact of a diagnosis of dementia on the person and their family/carers.
06. Be able to assess the needs of the person with dementia, their family/carers and develop a person-centred plan of care
07. Demonstrate knowledge of the resources available to assist the person with dementia and their family/carers.
08. Be able to debate the key issues and controversies related to dementia and the care of the person with dementia
