Subject outline
In this subject, students will gain an understanding of disease processes, including common infectious and non-infectious animal disease categories, from a veterinary nursing perspective. Students will be taken through the process of animal disease management, including aetiology, investigation, treatment, management and prevention. This subject also examines the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a range of common veterinary pharmaceuticals. Students will also acquire skills in performing a range of common clinical pathology tests. Students will apply the theory learnt in this subject via their work integrated learning placement.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of common veterinary pharmaceuticals
- Activities:
- Students undertake background reading on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetics of common veterinary pharmaceuticals. In a workshop, they work in teams to answer questions regarding the pharmacokinetics and pharmacokinetics of a number of medications used in case studies.
02. Explain the disease processes and management of common veterinary infectious and non-infectious diseases
- Activities:
- Student teams create a video to inform clients about a disease and how it is managed. The teams share this video with the class, to help achieve peer learning.
03. Design and develop evidence-based educational materials for clients and colleagues using appropriate language
- Activities:
- Student teams consider what type of language and vocabulary would be appropriate for clients, when designing their disease information video for clients. When they go on to develop the poster for staff members on infection control, they then compare what type of language is appropriate in this context.
04. Devise nursing management plans, including the infection control, of common animal diseases
- Activities:
- Student teams source evidence-based information on a case study of a veterinary infectious disease, and its control. They then go on to devise a logical flow chart of ordered actions for the effective infection control within a clinic or hospital of that particular veterinary infectious disease. Groups display their finished posters, for their peers to learn from.
05. Perform, read and record a range of common in-house veterinary clinical pathology tests, recognizing if any results are abnormal
- Activities:
- Students learn and practice a range of common in-house clinical pathology tests in workshops on campus, and then assist with running these tests whilst on placement. They also assist with recording the results on the animal's clinical records, and notify the veterinarian if any results are outside of normal parameters.
