Students complete a project that takes the equivalent of six months of continuous work under the supervision of a member of staff. The project is completed and written up as a thesis when the student completes the unit PHY5THB. All students are required to present a seminar outlining the proposed project at a time to be determined by the physics postgraduate coordinator.

Special conditions: This subject is the second part of a 60CP thesis program (PHY5THA and PHY5THB). Students will not be given a final mark until they complete PHY5THB.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Assess and interpret the scientific literature relevant to a chosen topic in some depth and plan and execute a scientific investigation in a research environment supported by a member of staff.

Activities:
Students complete a project started during enrolment in PHY5THA that takes the equivalent of six months of continuous work under the supervision of a member of staff. The project is completed and written up as a thesis when the student completes the subject PHY4THB.

02. Communicate effectively the key concepts, techniques, and research outcomes associated with the research project in an appropriate scientific manner.

Activities:
Prepare and deliver an individual audio visual presentation of approximately 20 minutes in duration before an audience of scientists working in a relevant discipline, summarising the research project. Answer questions about the research project in a professional manner.
