Subject outline
MSS3SSC Screen +Sound 3 is a capstone subject in which students explore ways of knowing and thinking about the world through screen and sound media. Students will evaluate the power of concepts such as frame, window, door, mirror and brain to explain the spectator's relation to real and imaginary worlds on screen and critically investigate the material ecologies of film production and consumption. Through viewing and listening exercises, students will investigate how moving images and soundscapes 'think' and make us think and explore some of the ways in which they will be able to contribute to future sustainable artistic practice that is informed by an ecological sensibility. Students will develop projects from a range of topics, such as: virtual reality and avatars; mind-game and puzzle films; CGI and 3-D worlds; distracted viewers and attentive listeners, the eco-politics of Hollywood and its alternatives, representations of landscape and national identity and ecological utopias and dystopias. This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential.
