Subject outline
Brazil now ranks with China and India as one of the great emerging powerhouses of the 21st century. In this subject students will examine Brazil's history, development and vibrant culture from prior to the conquest in 1500 to the present day. In addition, as the Amazon Basin is a vital factor in the fight against climate change, the subject will analyse the exploration, exploitation and the environment of Amazonia in terms of the ways in which the Amazon River shaped the development and history of South America, beginning with the search for El Dorado (the Land of Gold); the first attempts at settlement; the rubber boom and its consequences; and ultimately the Amazon's role as a environmental icon.
