What is 'normal' communication? Who can be considered to have a communication 'disability'? In this subject, you are encouraged to critically examine and consider the social construction of communication disability. You will consider how beliefs about communication disorders differ over time and across cultures, and how the lived experience of communication disabilities also varies.Through online lectures, interviews, and resources, you will learn about treatments, stigma, and history through the prism of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.The range of communication disorders considered in this subject include stuttering, cleft palate, autism, deafness, hearing loss, otitis media in indigenous populations, communication after a stroke, and other hearing disorders. Your learning in this subject will be assessed through an individual written assignment, an online quiz, and a group multimedia assignment.

01. Discuss and describe the impact of a given communication disorder upon a person's social, emotional, physical and financial wellbeing
- Activities:
- Students will complete an assignment exploring the lived experience of a specific communication disorder
02. Discuss and describe cultural health systems, beliefs, and socioeconomic factors that can impact upon a person with a communication disorder
- Activities:
- Students will complete an assignment in which the attitudes towards a specific communication disorder across cultures and/or time are explored
03. Describe the use of the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health in relation to a person with a given communication disorder
- Activities:
- Within the assignment exploring the lived experience of a communication disorder, students will are required to discuss the influence of the ICF model
04. Investigate and explain current information on the incidence, treatment innovations and community attitudes to a range of communication disorders
- Activities:
- Students will undertake an online quiz covering information on incidence, treatment innovations, and community atititudes toa range of communciaiton disorders
05. Discuss and describe the history of Speech Pathology and Audiology treatments in a range of communication disorders
- Activities:
- Students will complete an assignment in which the attitudes towards a specific communication disorder across cultures and/or time are explored
06. Develop an online media resource to clearly communicate, using accessibility principles, a key topic
- Activities:
- Students will use an online media platform to communicate a key topic effecitvely, whist implementing communicaiton accessibility principles
