Subject outline
This subject encourages students to to think about power relations that operate through our bodies from a variety of theoretical and thematic perspectives. We will cover theories of the body; entanglements between language, culture and our social conditions of existence; the drawing of borders on bodies, country and nation; reading and writing the body; and how bodies are understood through a range of institutional sites and cultural representations. To understand how knowledge, power, and text work through our bodies, we will focus on intersecting differences between gender, race, sexuality, disability, class, and age, among other identities. Subject materials will include critical theory, film, creative arts that engage with the body (theatre, dance etc), policy, and law.
