Subject outline
Advanced CAD (in this offering CATIA) is used as a design tool to build parts and assemblies aiding in complex design. Students will learn how to create parts and assemblies, drawings of those parts and assemblies, and basic FEA (Finite Element Analysis) for structural analysis. Apart of the simulation process students will learn how to generate meshes, apply boundary conditions, loads, and material properties to their design and generate an FEA report. Students will build a design portfolio containing rapid prototyping models whilst completing various exercises and design projects. Students will obtain a solid foundation in the use of CATIA for their future designs and engineering analyses.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Apply engineering drawing terminology and conventions appropriately.
- Activities:
- Terminology introduced in the lectures and reinforced and practiced in the tutorials and laboratory classes. Students are required to demonstrate competency in correct use of terminology in written answers to questions and practical applications.
02. Apply fundamental principles of design in laying out engineering CAD drawings complying with industry standards and practices.
- Activities:
- The principles of using CATIA are introduced in lectures and reinforced during tutorials and practiced during the laboratory sessions. Students are required to demonstrate competency in applying these principles, to the satisfaction of the tutor/lecturer, in written answers to tests questions, laboratory tasks and in solving problems, including simple calculations related to practical applications.
03. Demonstrate the use of the appropriate software to produce accurate drawings, parts assemblies and analysis.
- Activities:
- The relevant software, and their tools and styles are introduced in lectures. Reinforcement and further exploration of these occurs in tutorials and during laboratory session. Students' competency in applying the relevant software tools and styles is assessed in quiz questions and practical work.
04. Optimize models using CAD software to improve a design (e.g. strength, sustainability, cost).
- Activities:
- Optimization techniques are presented as examples in lectures and online content. Students apply these techniques in laboratory assignments, labs and major project to optimize their design for a specific parameter.
