Subject outline
This subject covers topics on PC hardware and peripherals, mobile device hardware, networking and troubleshooting hardware and network connectivity issues. It also covers techniques on installing and configuring operating systems including Windows, iOS, Android, Apple OS X and Linux. It addresses a wide spectrum of fundamental technical concepts on networking and/or databases, assesses and validates the candidate's technical knowledge of either networking or database system. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking two vendor certifications on hardware and networking or database fundamentals.

01. Identify and discuss the functions of computer hardware to meet clients' requirements.
- Activities:
- Webinars on computer hardware. Self-paced practical activities from the virtual environment "TestOut" resources are used whereby students can work within a simulated environment.
02. Explain the main functions of an operating system and the role of utility software and install, configure and troubleshoot an operating system to satisfy business requirements.

- Webinars on operating systems. Self-checking questions (online quizzes and short answer self-paced assessments) and online practical activities on installing, configuring and troubleshooting an operating system within a simulated environment.
03. Discuss the purpose and components of computer networks and build a network to address business requirements.

04. Explain the technical concepts of an information system infrastructure and apply them to business cases.
- Activities:
- Webinars and discussion forums, including practical demonstrations, to describe the technical concepts of an information system infrastructure.
05. Interpret the IT requirements of a business client and design an appropriate information system infrastructure.
