EXPLORING SCREEN ARTS

CRA1ECA

2019

Credit points: 15

This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinking entails deep appreciation of how the choices we make affects the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems — now and in the future.

Subject outline

This subject addresses the historical, conceptual and technological issues and ideas behind "screen" based artistic practices. One fundamental question to be explored is: What is a screen? One of the defining features of the digital age is the proliferation of screens. Where once traditional definitions of the screen were linked to ideas of a fixed space/place (movie theatres, television screens, etc.), the introduction of multiple and mobile screening devices, along with interactive and immersive screen-world experiences, has radically altered definitions of what a screen is, and, the viewer/user dynamic. The subject takes a trans-disciplinary approach, incorporating any art form or creative practice that makes use of screen-based technology or incorporates the projected or moving image, inclusive of films, photography, multi-media, and performance art that makes use of rear-projection. Assessment items for this subject allow for both research based work and creative projects. The Essential for this subject is Sustainability Thinking in relation to the arts and creative practices.
