Subject outline

In this subject, students will be introduced to chemical hazards and the safe handling of inorganic and organic chemicals. The topics introduced are the chemistry of carbon compounds: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, halides, phenols, ethers, nitro compounds, amines, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids. The stereochemistry and its implications are introduced in some detail. Some reaction mechanisms of organic compounds will be introduced in addition to the systematic chemical identification of organic molecules. In this subject, the practical component consists of seven experiments of three hours each. These experiments deal with preparation of Aspirin, Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analysis of analgesics drugs, molecular models and stereochemistry, relative rates of electrophilic aromatic substitution, the solubility and acid-base properties of organic compounds and functional group tests.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Identify the name of an organic molecule by observing its structure and draw the structure of an organic molecule from an appropriate common or systematic (IUPAC) name.

Activities:
Discussed in lectures and applied in tutorials and practicals. Will be involved in 3 lectures a week and one tutorial

02. Predict the outcome of a reaction between any given set of organic molecules and synthetic reagents using basic patterns of reactivity or identify appropriate starting materials to synthesize a simple organic molecule, which contains one of the common functional groups.

Activities:
Discussed in lectures and applied in tutorials and practicals .

03. Predict the overall three-dimensional structure of relatively simple organic molecules that contain the common functional groups by applying the basic principles of bonding, hybridization and conformation analysis.

Activities:
Discussed in lectures and applied in tutorials and practicals .

04. Safely handle laboratory glassware, equipment, and chemical reagents using general guidelines and basic knowledge about the common hazards associated with operations performed in an organic chemistry laboratory.

Activities:
Students have six labs, each of 3-hour duration.

05. Interpret laboratory results and data correctly within inherent limitations regarding precision and report findings in a scientific notebook using acceptable appropriate notational and descriptive content.

Activities:
Students have six of 3 hour practical labs and they are required to submit 6 written practical reports based on group work..

06. Apply critical thinking to solve problems involving quantitative responses.

Activities:
Students sit two tutorial short tests
