Subject outline
This subject will assist you in developing your writing skills for university assessment tasks and professional business communication. You will enhance your knowledge of good writing practice through working with models of excellent writing, and practising these yourself. You will also understand the expectations for completing assessment tasks in Business Writing and other subjects. In this subject, we provide regular assistance and feedback on writing practice generally, and on written assessment tasks specifically. Business Writing will assist you to successfully fulfil the writing demands of a first year business student, by progressively developing your writing skills for academic assignments and professional work, in face-to-face and online environments.

Special conditions Students will only be eligible to enrol in this subject if they fail to meet the benchmark set for the Writing Diagnostic required of all commencing UG students of the Business School. Successful completion of this subject will be a program requirement for all UG business students failing to meet the benchmark set for the Writing Diagnostic.

01. Identify and apply scholarly conventions to your own writing, including accurate referencing.
- Activities:
- So as to understand and apply principles of academic integrity, students will complete the AIM and referencing exercises, facilitated by a University librarian and the subject coordinator.

02. Research and write an essay, using scholarly evidence to support a relevant argument in a business context.
- Activities:
- Students will draft a brief plan for the major essay, using a template provided by the subject co-ordinator. Guided by formative, written feedback, students will extend their research (locating a variety of resources) and writing skills to develop an essay, and clarify their own critical stances as scholarly writers.

03. Identify the basic structural, grammatical and stylistic features of academic writing and use these in their own writing.
- Activities:
- Drawing on models of good writing in business as well as interactive exercises, students will produce several texts that exemplify the core features of writing required by Business discipline lecturers.

04. Examine a variety of texts to construct an argument and defend it with evidence.
