Subject outline

Historical and ecological aspects of the increasing global problems with plant pests and diseases will be presented. The diversity, broad classification into taxa, life-history and ecology of the main organisms adversely affecting crop production (including: insects, mites, and nematodes, fungi, fungi-like organisms, bacteria, viruses) will be examined. The principles and practice of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in agriculture, based on deployment of resistant cultivars, cultural and biological control measures and judicious use of pesticides, will be demonstrated in online interviews and face-to-face interactions with IPM experts, practical experiments in the lab and a field trip to a farm where IPM ispracticed for pest control. In the practical classes students will study arange of insect pests and plant pathogens and visit a vegetable farm to observe first-hand and discuss with growers they approaches they use to manage pests and diseases.

02. Explain and apply the theories of Integrated Pest Management.

Activities:
Theory and application of Integrated Pest Management introduced in lectures, observed in the field and laboratory classes, and researched by students on line, this includes exposure to concepts and practices of plant production in an environmental and ethically sustainable manner.

03. Locate and synthesise information from appropriate online resources about plants, pests and disease.

Activities:
Students are given guidance on suitable sites/resources to conduct individual online research, including issues relating to global food security, production and trade in relation to plant quarantine frameworks. Their findings to be used in an annotated ePortfolio, online quiz questions and answers in final written exam.

Activities:
Cultural and ethical behaviours relating to food production/farm practices will be discussed during field trips and in follow-up studies in the laboratory.
