DESIGNING CHILDREN'S ENVIRONMENTS

PLA4CIE

2018

Subject outline

During the industrialisation that occurred in the Victorian era, there was a strong push to design better cities and towns to address issues of poverty, education and youth delinquency amongst children and young people. From the 1960s, there has been increasing research interest in children's and young people's views about their environments and their agency to participate in decision-making affecting their lives. Founded on notions of children's citizenship, contemporary debate is now focused on normalising children's and young people's participation in political and planning processes. In this fieldwork based subject, students apply concepts of children's rights, health and development within a planning policy context to produce a spatial masterplan design. The skills learned in this subject also apply to other social groups e.g. older people, new and emerging communities, and people with different abilities. This subject includes mandatory field trips.
