Subject outline
In this subject, students gain practical experience, applying analytical and problem-solving strategies to real health care and public health problems using an action learning framework. This subject is a capstone subject for MHA, MPH and MESH students and an elective for a number of other public health degrees. Students complete an action research project in public health, health promotion or health services management directed to improving health by integrating skills and knowledge gained in the postgraduate programs of the School of Psychology and Public Health and deepening skills in reflection, project management, planning and evaluation. The concept of reflective practice is applied and students have the opportunity to examine their styles and practice, consider their development needs and how they might ensure ongoing learning throughout their careers. In the process, the students are supported to produce a conference poster and to publish an article from the work undertaken.

Prerequisites Students must be enrolled in one of the following course codes HMPHC, HMHA, HMHADE, HZBAHA, HZPHHA, HZPHID,HZHPHID, HZMBHA, HMHS or HMERGD. Students must also have completed the core and foundation for their respective degrees (120 credit points) prior to enrolment in this capstone subject.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Plan, deliver and evaluate projects in an area of interest in public health, health promotion or health services management.
- Activities:
- Analysis, reporting and appropriate graphing of quantitative data.
02. Identify and analyse issues in health policy, provision or management to develop, evaluate and recommend potential solutions
- Activities:
- Collection, analysis and reporting of qualitative data.
03. Interpret and apply the ethical responsibilities and duties of care health practitioners have to participants and their data
- Activities:
- Appropriate problem tree and logical framework including identification of appropriate indicators for health and development programs.
04. Solve complex problems in the delivery of workplace projects
- Activities:
- Articulation in peer-reviewed papers and presentations of underlying causes of problems in specific populations, significant stakeholders, criteria for prioritisation and remedial strategies.
05. Reflect critically on their own professional practice and provide insight and feedback to colleagues
- Activities:
- Ability to design a systematic, appropriate and ethical population health project and synthesise and articulate the findings.
06. Design and implement evidence based practice research, including data analysis and reporting of findings
- Activities:
- Reinforcement of lecture materials. Presentation of a Project Proposal which specifically addresses this topic.
07. Present project results and conclusions through business reports and academic papers, formal verbal presentations, academic posters, and articles for publication

- Reinforcement of lecture materials in preparation of an assessed assignment.
