Subject outline
This is an advanced subject that will help students to develop your knowledge and skills to identify the effects of medications on physiological, biochemical & Pathophysiological processes. Over twelve weeks students will work in small class sizes both online and in practice, students will utilise systematic clinical assessment, commonwealth & state legislation, policy and regulation, the Quality Use of Medications and the Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice and apply this knowledge gained to justify rationales for the initiation/instigation of medication administration & prescribing considerations. Student learning will be assessed through a presentation, in class exams and performance in practice.

01. Apply advanced practice nursing knowledge, skills &/or equipment/technology to conduct a comprehensive and systematic clinical assessment for a patient specific to your clinical practice in regards to pharmacological intervention.

02. Distinguish between the fundamental principles of pharmacology, including the differences between pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, including the manner in which medications are absorbed, distributed, metabolised and excreted in the body.

03. Make informed judgements and develop plans in response to well defined scenarios, based on assessment, review and analysis of relevant and substantial medication information within your speciality practice area.

04. Critically analyse current knowledge, and apply clinical reasoning skills to plan and deliver medication education to patient / significant others in their clinical practice using a systematic approach and incorporate a working knowledge of the individual influences of medication adherence.

05. Justify the rationale for medication selection taking into consideration the dosage, route and duration of chosen regimen in relation to diagnostic and laboratory test results.

06. Apply ethical standards to new contexts within advanced nursing practice and the roles and responsbilities for safe prescribing of medicatons.
