Subject outline
In this subject students will extend their knowledge of the components that provide frameworks for accountable and responsible nursing practice. Through lectures, online activities and workshops students will explore competency standards, decision making frameworks, direction and delegation guidelines and the Australian safety and quality framework in relation to professional conduct. In addition, students will be introduced to the role of contemporary theories of leadership and management, the concept of professional boundaries, health policy,organisational structures and culture. Students capacity to engage in their professional role across all practice settings will be enhanced by completion of this subject. To achieve the learning outcomes of this subject students will be expected to complete a range of written and verbal assessments within a 12-week period.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Explain the impact of corporate and clinical governance models in Australia and international health services in relation to person-centred care.
- Activities:
- Online examples of clinical governance models from the Australian and international context. Workshop to discuss the difference between legal and professional codes and guidelines and individual responsibilities.
02. Appraise contemporary health policy issues and current legislation as they relate to safety and quality in nursing.
- Activities:
- Online resources and web links to national health policy and standards. Workshops to discuss safety and quality frameworks and their impact on individual outcomes. Webinar or recorded lecture from a senior health adviser
03. Explain how organisational structure, organisational culture and contextual variables influence the nursing environment and the coordinated approach to person centred care.
- Activities:
- Online resources and examples of organisational change drawing from contemporary theories (e.g.Carl May, 2010). Webinar with CEO of major health care provider and health care professional from same organisation to illustrate organisation structure and change mechanisms. Workshops to discuss and critique student experiences of organisation cultures in their clinical practicum.
04. Critique contemporary nursing leadership theories, core competencies and personal capabilities and their importance to individuals, teams and the nursing profession.
- Activities:
- Online resources and examples of contemporary leadership theories. Debate: Suggested topic: #Advocate or administrator: role of the contemporary nurse#.
05. Develop and apply communication skills that directly relate to health information systems.
- Activities:
- Online resources and examples of electronic patient records. Online resources - students will explore will explore the advantages and disadvantages of eHealth.gov.au. Workshop to discuss safety and security issues of health informatics
06. Apply awareness of the transition from student to registered health care practitioner through critical self-reflection.

- Online resources linked to the development of emotional intelligence.
