Subject outline
The primary focus of this subject is international trade and the development of two of the key elememts in establishing lasting global trade relationships - Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Bilatreal Investment Treaties (Bits). The subject will review (a) the statuatory and regulatory base for FTAs and Bits, (b) their impact on overall global economic efficiency and the controversies that they sometimes engender, and (c) the dispute settlement protocols - including arbitration under the ICSID Convention Rules and the World Trade Organization's Dispute Resolution Body - that are primarily used to resolve differences between the participants.
