Subject outline

Sports reporting is news reporting. It requires an understanding of sports-specific news values. This subject will introduce you to sports-specific news values through some of the most common forms of reporting in sport, press conference reporting, match reporting, profile pieces and opinion writing. This subject also explores the context in which sports journalists work, focusing on the major changes in the relationship between sports organisations and the media that cover them in the 21st century. In particular, it explores the implications of sports organisations own media platforms and public relations staff on sports journalists' work.

Special conditions Core subject for the Bachelor of Media and Communication (Sport Journalism). Available as an elective for other majors in the Bachelor of Media and Communication, the Communication major within the Bachelor of Arts and the Journalism major in the Bachelor of Arts.

02. Apply sports-specific news values to write sport news pieces, such as a match report and press conference report, to an industry standard level, to deadline.

Activities:
Weekly lectures and tutorial activities. Students will watch a sporting event as assigned by the tutor, shotlist it as they are watching it and then write a match report to be uploaded to a strict deadline. This task requires students to be conscious of a deadline. Weekly lectures and tutorial activities. Students will be given vision of a media conference one week prior to their live cross. They will need to identify the main angle arising from the conference and conduct their own research on the person of interest to provide context to the news angle.

03. Conduct an interview and create profile style piece using interview quotes and other relevant sources, written to a publishable standard.

Activities:
After preparing in class with research and examples, and tips in lectures, students will complete a community sports profile piece, where they must conduct an interview and write a profile piece. Students will complete this activity in small groups.
