Subject outline
In this subject, students will learn effective written communication skills for the Arts. Students will be introduced to a variety of key texts and narratives in the humanities and social sciences: from masterpieces and manifestos, to memes. Students will select a text or narrative based on their personal interests (e.g. Orwell's 1984; The Communist Manifesto; Orange is the New Black) to investigate throughout the semester, discovering its broader cultural meaning. They will be guided through critical and analytical skills as they progress toward their final research essay, learning how to understand texts in their historical and social context. Each week students will produce a piece of writing that critically engages with their chosen text or narrative. This folio of writing builds towards a final research essay. This subject is a first-year core for students in the Diploma in Arts (Bundoora). Each week students will attend a lecture, a tutorial and a workshop, where they will master their written communication skills and engage in close reading of texts.
