Subject outline

One unit of communication is the word. However, when audiologists or speech pathologists probe communication breakdown, leading to the identification of therapy targets, elements that are smaller or larger than the word are also routinely used. Focusing mainly on English, students of HCS2ACW will come to understand the principles of probing inside words and of creating well-formed word combinations. Within words, phonetic properties are explored, as is the notion of decomposing a word into minimally meaningful elements. Units of communication created by word combination are also introduced; these include the clause, as well as entities smaller or larger than the clause. Representing (e.g. drawing) structures created when words are combined, as well as structures within words, is a key skill for understanding the speech pathology or audiology literature and for professional communication thereafter. Representational skills and communication skills are thus emphasised throughout HCS2ACW.
