Subject outline
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a six month work placement in an engineering company, working as part of a team on an engineering project or product development. This subject will allow the student to experience a real work place environment and through this become 'work ready' after graduation. This experience should enhance the student's teamwork, time management and people skills. It will also expose students to the engineering decision making process, the importance of economic and business management, and the need for innovation. Students will work to achieve the following Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies: 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 (see intended learning outcomes for details).

01. Demonstrate professional and effective written communication skills. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 3.2 Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains.
- Activities:
- As part of the WIL application process, students are required to write cover letters and resumes, and tailor them specifically to the advertised positions. The quality of their application will determine if they reach the interview stage. Once a WIL is secured, students are expected to communicate effectively and professionally via email with colleagues and clients, this will be assessed from the students weekly reflective journal as well as a final report of the project/tasks that had been completed.

- Activities:
- As part of the WIL application process, successful students will need to attend one or more formal interviews. Once a WIL is secures, students are expected to communicate professionally, clearly and effectively with their colleagues and clients, this will be assessed from the students weekly reflective journal as well as a final report of the project/tasks that had been completed.

03. Apply learned knowledge and skills in industry. Includes EA stage 1 competencies: 1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline, 1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline, 1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline, 3.2 Effective oral and written communication.
