Subject outline

In this subject students will be introduced to the principles of fixed prosthodontics via a series of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions. These new skills will then be transferred to the treatment of patients on clinic. The subject will be delivered in Bendigo over a three-week intensive period, culminating in both written and practical assessments.

01. Devise a series of steps involving examination, radiography and diagnostic skills to enable fixed prosthodontics to be incorporated into comprehensive treatment planning.

02. Rationalise, and apply, the principles of tooth preparation for indirect restorations, both full and partial coverage.

03. Explain the principles underlying the management of soft tissue when taking impressions for fixed prosthodontics.

04. Interpret the rationale for the selection of materials used in fixed prosthodontics, particularly alloys, ceramics, impression materials, luting agents and provisionals.

05. Discuss the concepts of occlusion and occlusal form and how they relate to diagnosis and treatment planning.

06. Demonstrate knowledge of the design and laboratory procedures used in the production of crowns and bridges and how we, as clinicians, impact on their outcome.

07. Appraise, criticise or justify the findings from a short literature review on a topic to be allocated in Dilemmas in Fixed Prosthodontics.

08. Produce diagnostic casts, mounted with inter-occlusal records.
