Subject outline
Due to the ubiquitous nature of mobile and wireless technology in our daily lives and business operation, ensuring wireless security is becoming a top priority. This subject explores the security vulnerabilities in wireless networks and cover the fundamental concepts of confidentiality, integrity and availability. The following key concepts will be covered: Wireless LAN Security - Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Authentication Servers (RADIUS), 802.11i security standard; Securing Ad-Hoc Networks - MAC layer misbehaviour, secure routing protocols, types of attacks and solutions, key management, broadcast authentication.

01. Produce security risk assessment reports based on the identification and appraisal of various threats and attacks on wireless systems
- Activities:
- Students learn about various specific threats to wireless through lectures/modules as well as practical exercises
02. Design solutions based on enterprise security requirements by analysis of the processes of authentication and encryption and examination of wireless security protocols
- Activities:
- Detailed analysis of wireless security protocols is covered in lectures/modules. Various protocols are examined in virtual laboratory exercises
03. Critically analyse different wireless network security architectures and apply suitable settings for home, enterprises and public environments
- Activities:
- Different wireless security solutions applicable to a number of scenarios are discussed in lectures/modules.
04. Assess and evaluate potential and existing security risk levels and vulnerabilities in wireless systems
- Activities:
- Students learn about risk assessment for wireless in lectures/modules.
