Subject outline
In this subject students will explore a wide range of topics relating to the politics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This subject enables the student to understand what Indigenous politics is and how Indigenous people have organised themselves in response to government legislation and policies. The student will understand what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people expect and mean when they talk about 'Treaty', 'Aboriginal self-determination', 'Land Rights' and many other topics relating to Indigenous Australia. Students will explore a diverse range of past and current case examples and events to gain an understanding of Indigenous political development. Topics will include the Australian Constitution, the White Australia Policy, Land Rights and Treaty, resistance politics, grass roots political movement (Sorry Day and Reconciliation) and government policies (Close the Gap). Students intending to major in Aboriginal Studies are strongly advised to take this subject.
