RethinkingAboriginal Studies explores the processes and impacts of colonisation through acritical lens to encourage innovative and empowering discussion forchange. Topics include accounts of colonialism, Indigeneity,survival, and entrepreneurship. The purpose is to critically examine how pastand current Indigenous knowledges are represented in the Western academy,and to explore the ongoing contestation of Indigenous perspectives withinresearch governance, pedagogy and curriculum design, and in public contextssuch as cinema, art and higher education. Students will be inspired to thinkbeyond Western boundaries as places of containment and sites ofstruggle for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within a global,national and local context. This subject is an opportunity forIndigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to collectively and individually fosternew ways to decolonise the mind, the policies and practices that historicallyimposed and maintained colonialism.
