Subject outline

This subject examines the role of museums, galleries, public and commercial arts funding structures and how they interact with, and impact on, professional visual arts practice Students will acquire knowledge of the history and role of museums: including their physical or architectural considerations, collection policy, curatorial philosophy, the commercial, administrative and legal governance and their educational and conservation requirements. Students will develop the ability to identify public funding bodies and how to apply for grants and residencies, how to negotiate the sale and marketing of artwork, and to critically evaluate alternatives to conventional exhibition, display and marketing options currently available to the visual artist.
