SWP3UIO
2017
Credit points: 15
Subject outline
In this subject students explore the impact of organisational contexts on social work practice. Students analyse the structure, purpose and dynamics of 21st century human service organisations and build an understanding of the role organisations play in implementing social policies and delivering services. Students examine governance and decision making and the role of organisational culture in shaping the experience of service users. Students are introduced to the changing organisational context in which social workers are employed, how they operate effectively in teams and alongside other professionals. Strategies such as the use of professional supervision and critical reflection are considered in light of the common challenges and tensions that occur between professional expectations, social policy imperatives and organisational pragmatics.
