Subject outline
Increasing movements of people, goods, ideas and media across the globe are transforming society and the social. What does mobility mean for different social groups, such as asylum seekers, labour migrants or tourists? What shapes experiences of mobility, immobility and moorings? And which politics have emerged around movement in the areas of tourism, transport and consumption? This subject examines how politics, practices and representations of mobilities are transforming people's experiences of work, relationships, emotions, tourism and transport. We will pay particular attention to the growing tension between restrictions to cross-border mobility and the promotion of hyper-mobility in other areas such as consumption and communication.
