Subject outline
In this subject we will explore the discipline of developmental psychology from the earliest period of prenatal development through infancy, childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood and old age. Examining research undertaken using a variety of different methods will enable students to develop critical thinking skills for interpreting research results. Students will be encouraged to appreciate the interconnectedness of various domains of development; sensation and perception, motor coordination, emotional, social and cognitive development. Throughout, we will examine the ways in which very early milestones and features of development in each of these domains sets the scene for the later development of more complex processes such as adult personality, identity, moral reasoning, and the establishment and maintenance of supportive interpersonal relationships.

01. Identify, outline and describe the major milestones and stages of human lifespan development and key concepts important to adopting a developmental approach to psychology.
- Activities:
- Formative: Tutorial Class Exercises. Summative: Examination Questions.
02. Describe, apply, and evaluate research methods to address a variety of developmental research questions relevant to individuals at different stages of the lifespan.

- Formative: Tutorial Class Exercises. Summative: Examination Questions.
03. To undertake a comprehensive literature review that shows the application of existing scientific knowledge to a novel research question and is used to generate logical hypotheses to be tested through a research study.
- Activities:
- Formative: Tutorial Class Exercises. Task 1: Students contribute to data collection for a specified project. Analysis of data will be done by the coordinator/assistant. Task 2: Students work independently to write Lab Report Part 1: Intro & Methods. Task 3: Following receipt of feedback on Laboratory Report Part 1, students are provided with data analysis results and work independently to write Laboratory Report Part 2: Results & Discussion on the same topic. Formative and Summative: 25% Laboratory Report Part 1 (Intro and Method) provides feedback directly applicable to 25% Laboratory Report Part 2 (Results and Discussion). Summative: Examination Questions.
04. Demonstrate ethical awareness with respect to appropriate citation in written work, scientific integrity in data collection, and professional conduct in interactions with colleagues and adults participating in research.

- Formative: See Task 1 above regarding Data Collection for Contribution to Group Analysis. Tutorial Class Exercises will also prepare students for this.
