Subject outline

In this subject students will learn and integrate the knowledge and skills required to design projects aimed at developing and implementing innovations in paramedicine and clinical practice within a local community context. The final two clinical placement subjects will be undertaken in conjunction with this subject. Students will be encouraged to collaborate with paramedics, other health care professionals and local communities to develop work that is of potential benefit to paramedicine, and the health and well-being of the community. The learning activities will be enquiry-based and may include clinical or systems research and evaluation, development of health education initiatives or exploration of innovations in paramedic practice. Students will develop and consolidate skills and knowledge in community needs analysis, critical analysis and interdisciplinary practice in a community setting.

02. Critically review and describe the current and future role of paramedics and ambulance services in the primary healthcare emergency health system. You will be able to a. Compare and contrast the gaps in health care workforce resources in underserved and well-served communities. b. Critically analyse the current role of paramedics and ambulance services in a local health system. c. Identity and appraise innovations in paramedic practice (clinical or service delivery models) that could contribute to improvements in the primary healthcare system. d. Examine the feasibility and desirability of changing paramedic practice or service delivery models to improve community health outcomes.

04. Explore and debate the extent to which paramedics are integrated into the health system. You will be able to a. Critically examine the facilitators and barriers to the further integration of paramedics and ambulance services into the health system. b. Argue the extent to which ambulance service policies and actions support or hinder the development of a more integrated health system. c. Identify and design public health and health promotion activities that paramedics could undertake to promote community wellness and disease prevention. d. Appraise the strength of the evidence for innovations in 'community paramedic' practice.

Development of an appreciation of the challenges that innovators face when proposing changes in the health workforce. Report on one significant change in paramedic clinical practice or professional roles in the last five years.
