Subject outline
In this subject, learners will shift their view beyond the occupational challenges facing individuals, to consider the ways in which occupational therapists enable social change at the level of the community, population and organisation. Learners will focus on gaining knowledge and skills required for their impending role as health practitioners in a rapidly changing health and social context. The subject is comprised of three key themes: prevention and health promotion, project management and contemporary practice issues. Learners will apply, critique and reflect upon major subject themes through the conduct of a substantial organisational project.

01. Students will identify and analyse contemporary practice issues and trends that impact on health and the occupational therapy profession: (a) students will describe how occupation is enabled at the level of the community, organisation and population; (b) students will investigate and describe the relationship between occupation and social determinants of health.

02. Students will critically analyse the theory and practice of occupation and occupational therapy at a community and population level, taking account of other health related frameworks and strategies including the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion: Capacity Building; Community Development; Organisation/Service Development.

03. Students will critically evaluate theoretical development and the practical environment, taking account of occupational and sustainability factors within prevention based health projects and use the evaluation outcomes to design a project proposal.
