Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Plan and complete a short research project which involves acquiring, interpreting and explaining scientific findings in an academic or industrial setting.

Activities:
Students are embedded in a research group during the course of the project. Students negotiate with their supervisor a set of tasks for them to perform which are commensurate with the skills and background acquired during previous undergraduate experience and will lead to a successful, self-contained scientific finding. The progress of these tasks is discussed at regular meetings.

02. Assess, interpret and explain the scientific findings of the project in some depth, in appropriate academic style, relating the findings to any relevant findings published in appropriate scientific literature, and determining which, if any, of the findings are novel.

Activities:
One individual literature review equivalent to 600 words Students write a scientific report of approximately 4,500 words in consultation with the supervisor, including at least one draft, including figures and references as appropriate for the field of research

03. Communicate effectively the key concepts and techniques used in completing the research project and the scientific findings in an appropriate scientific manner.

Activities:
Prepare and deliver an individual audio visual presentation of approximately 30 minutes in duration before an audience of scientists working in a relevant discipline, summarising the research work performed during the project. Answer technical questions about the project in a professional manner. This presentation will be prepared in consultation with the supervisor and will draw on experience in speaking in previous undergraduate subjects.
