Subject outline

This unit provides students with an extended opportunity to undertake a laboratory-based nanotechnology research project under the supervision of La Trobe University staff or jointly with La Trobe University staff and appropriate outside organisations. Students are encouraged to develop their own interests and may gain experience in leading nanofabrication or characterization technologies, and tackle problems of fundamental or applied nature. The project outcomes will be presented in a seminar at the end of the teaching period.

Prerequisites This unit is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nanotechnology/Bachelor of Science (SZNTS or SZNS) or Bachelor of Science (Hons)/Master of Nanotechnology (SZHSNT or SZHSN) and to Exchange and Study Abroad students approved by the Nanotechnology Program Co-ordinator.

Co-requisitesN/A

Incompatible subjects NAN3PRO, NAN3PRE

Equivalent subjectsN/A

Special conditions NAN3PRA and NAN3PRB form Part A and Part B of an extended nanotechnology research project. Students enrol in both subjects, allowing the project to take place over the academic year or over two consecutive teaching periods. Both subjects are examined as one at the end of the second teaching period.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Plan and complete an extended research project which involves acquiring, interpreting and explaining scientific findings in an academic or industrial setting.

Activities:
Students are embedded in a research group during the course of the project. Students negotiate with their supervisor a set of tasks for them to perform which are commensurate with the skills and background acquired during previous undergraduate experience and will lead to a successful, self-contained scientific finding. The progress of these tasks is discussed at regular meetings.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Inquiry/ Research (Inquiry/ Research)
Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking)
Discipline-specific GCs (Discipline-specific GCs)
Creative Problem-solving (Creative Problem-solving)

02. Assess, interpret and explain the scientific findings of the project in some depth, in appropriate academic style, relating the findings to any relevant findings published in appropriate scientific literature, and determining which, if any, of the findings are novel.

Activities:
Students write an initial literature review of approximately 1,400 words within the first 6 weeks of the project. This review will be incorporated into their final scientific report. Students write a scientific report of approximately 7,000 words in consultation with the supervisor, including at least one draft, including figures and references as appropriate for the field of research.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Inquiry/ Research (Inquiry/ Research)
Discipline-specific GCs (Discipline-specific GCs)
Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking)
Writing (Writing)

03. Communicate effectively the key concepts and techniques used in completing the research project and the scientific findings in an appropriate scientific manner.

Activities:
Prepare and deliver an individual audio visual presentation of approximately 30 minutes in duration before an audience of scientists working in a relevant discipline, summarising the research work performed during the project and outcomes achieved. Answer technical questions about the project in a professional manner. This presentation will be prepared in consultation with the supervisor and will draw on experience in speaking in previous undergraduate subjects.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking)
Speaking (Speaking)
Discipline-specific GCs (Discipline-specific GCs)
