Subject outline

In this subject, students focus on the forms of histories as they emerged in the ancient Greek and Roman eras, and/or in medieval-to-early-modern eras (whether Pagan, Catholic, Orthodox or Islamic). The historians you choose to study might include Herodotus, Thucydides, Polybius, Caesar, Sallust, Livy, Tacitus, Ammianus Marcellinus, Eusebius, Procopius, Gregory of Monmouth, Froissart, Commynes, Bruni, Ibn Khaldun, Valla and Guiccardini. After an overview, students will choose to focus (across any two eras) on change either in the genres of histories of states and empires at war, or of annals or chronicles, or of biography and memoir, or of ethnography. Whatever the two eras chosen, students conclude their study with an in-depth analysis of change in genre, agendas, audience, tropes and sources, or of contrast in how histories compared to forms of biography, ethnography, art, religious rites or values, or architecture evident then.
