Global Citizenship is about learning to live in an interconnected world, including the social, environmental, political and economic challenges this brings. This subject addresses La Trobe's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential. Innovation and Entrepreneurship is about using your creativity to generate new ideas, understand and solve complex problems and thrive in a fast-changing world. This subject addresses La Trobe's Sustainability Thinking Essential. Sustainability Thinking entails deep appreciation of how the choices we make affects the natural, economic, social, political and cultural systems — now and in the future.

Subject outline

The whole point of study is to try to make a difference, or to be a difference. During a two-week intensive period of study, Activism and Community: Research, Collaborate and Initiate offers students an opportunity to identify and investigate a topic situated in any area where community life intersects with an agenda for change or for continuity: social, political, cultural, gendered, or .. whatever. In consultation with lecturers and tutors, students can approach the subject from a range of theoretical and applied perspectives. As co-authors of this subject, students will determine the issue that matters to them and suggest ways of bringing it to the critical attention of the public. Through case-based teaching, students will learn to argue and defend their analysis, as well as to communicate their findings effectively and persuasively. This subject is about the social, political and cultural contexts that shape public engagement with change and activism. At the conclusion of the subject, students will have learned skills related to community activism and constructive and creative protest.
