Subject outline

This subject extends students' understanding of the concepts underlying health information management and health informatics. The focus is on both administrative and clinical information systems including system specification issues and technical considerations for electronic information systems. Case studies and enquiries are used to apply critical theories to applications. Discussions, research and student presentations enable students to create a model for designing information systems to support the provision of quality care.

01. Investigate and explain the key elements of computer-based information systems and basic concepts of health inforamtics, as applied in the effective management of health information.

Face-to-face and part-recorded lectures, workshop activities, guided discussion, guided readings, and a formative quiz.

02. Demonstrate an introductory level understanding of typical health information flows and the factors that influence the performance, outcomes and outputs of computer-based health information systems.

03. Investigate and describe the scope and functions of systems for the capture, use, and reporting of health administrative information applied to support the operations and obligations of the business, and patient/client care.

Activities:
Face-to-face and part-recorded lectures, guided discussion of comparative systems in hospital and other healthcare agency Health Information Service and related environments. Students will work in teams to complete enquiry-based workshop activities and a team assignment supported by audio-visual recordings, guided readings and formative quiz.,

04. Demonstrate an understanding of the scope and functions of systems for the capture, use, and reporting of clinical information applied to support patient/client care, and health business operational requirements.

Students will work in teams to complete enquiry-based workshop activities and a team assignment supported by audio-visual recordings, guided readings, and a formative quiz.

05. Investigate and describe the purposes and applications of protocol-based information systems in healthcare to support clinical decision-making and patient care.

06. Use contemporary health information technology policy, reports and other sources to build an understanding of the most recent developments in eHealth governance, standards and applications, including for personally-held electronic health records.
