Credit points: 15

Subject outline

Biochemistry and molecular biology is concerned with the function of biological systems at the molecular level. Biochemistry is central to most studies in biology and life sciences and is directly related to medical and agricultural research and biotechnology. In this unit students will extend previous knowledge gained from their biochemistry subjects related to membranes, cell signalling, proteins, bioinformatics, gene structure and function and relate them to a cellular biology context. In this semester, students study the molecular events of cell life and death, gene expression, molecular and cellular neuroscience, cell signalling, molecular aspects of cancer and immunology and applications of biochemistry.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Explain and define concepts in biochemistry and molecular biology using appropriate vocabulary, related to organelle biosynthesis, gene expression and RNA biology, cancer, immunology and neurobiochemistry

Activities:
Students attend lectures outlining facts and key concepts related to the subject. Students are then able to further complement the lectures by reading additional material either suggested or provided by the lecturers including original research articles, reviews and text book summaries.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing)
Inquiry and Analytical Skills(Critical Thinking,Creative Problem-solving)
Inquiry and Analytical Skills(Critical Thinking,Creative Problem-solving)
Discipline -Specific Knowledge and Skills(Discipline-Specific Knowledge and Skills)

02. Apply concepts in biochemistry and molecular biology to solve theoretical problems and interpret experimental data.

Activities:
At the end of each block of lectures, students attend a lectorial (large group tutorial) where they are able to test their knowledge of the lectures by answering typical exam style questions and solve problems using concepts learnt in lectures. Student will work in small groups under the guidance of the lecturer. Assessed in Lectorial Worksheets Assessed in theory exams.
Related graduate capabilities and elements:
Literacies and Communication Skills(Writing)

03. Navigate and report on current scientific literature.

Activities:
Students will to generate a detailed review on a subject related to one of the lecture topics.
