Biomedical science is the study of health and disease and plays an important role in modern medicine. In this subject, students are introduced to fundamental concepts in important human disorders and diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease and infectious disease. Subject material will cover the key biological processes and molecular mechanisms that underpin the progression of these diseases. Students will also be introduced to potential career paths of biomedical science graduates in clinical settings and biomedical research via seminars from experts in these professions.

Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes

01. Demonstrate an understanding of the key biological processes involved in human disease by use of descriptive disease-specific examples and their significance in disease processes.

Activities:
Lectures and tutorials. Assessed by formal examination and short answer and/or multiple choice questions in tutorials.

02. Demonstrate research/inquiry skills by identifying, evaluating and collating appropriate information for coherent written and/or oral reports.

Activities:
Critical analysis and interpretation of published scientific materials. Students will research and prepare a written report on a particular disease and its treatment. A tutorial with examples will be given to teach students effective research/inquiry skills and presentation of written/oral reports. Assessment will include quality of written report in terms of content, interpretation of findings, clarity of presentation.

03. Explain the importance of ethical and professional conduct necessary for a career in the biomedical related professions.

Activities:
Tutorial based discussion. Students will work through short answer and/or multiple choice questions in tutorials.

04. Contribute and collaborate effectively as a team to research, prepare and present a clear and coherent written document and/or oral presentation for assessment.

Activities:
Students will work as small groups to research and develop a precis of a topic of biomedical interest. This will involve coordination of and negotiation with fellow group members to produce the final assessment item. A tutorial will be given to help students work effectively in a team environment. Assessed by quality of presentation in terms of content, structure and clarity together with the ability to work effectively as a team.
