Subject outline
This unit studies the anatomy and physiology of the central nervous system, auditory neuroscience, neural coding and neuroplasticity, models of excitable cells and the theory of excitation. Electrode theory, electrode design and electrical stimulators are discussed. Use and design principles of neural prostheses, cochlear implants, retinal implants, implants for epilepsy, auditory brainstem implants, deep brain stimulation, functional electrical stimulation and control systems for neuroprostheses. Biocompatability of neuroprostheses is considered.
