ADVANCED COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

ELE4ACS

2016

Credit points: 15

Subject outline

In this unit students will focus on advanced radio-based communication systems including the study of mobile radio communication systems, the evolution of mobile communications from 1G to 4G networks and some radar system fundamentals. Students will learn important concepts in the design of radio networks including link budgets, propagation path losses, transmitter/receiver parameters, antenna theory and application. Concepts such as teletraffic, traffic distribution and management are also covered. The subject is heavily focused on practical communications engineering and includes a minor project which enables students to design, manufacture and test antenna systems. The unit also examines global challenges around frequency spectrum allocation and sustainable practice for communications systems.
