Subject outline
This is an interdisciplinary elective for students from language backgrounds other than English and a core subject for bridging students within the Education Faculty. This subject provides students who have already met the English prerequisites for enrolment with an opportunity to further develop their English academic skills. The theoretical component analyses academic discourse in intercultural contexts and explores the cultural values that shape these forms of communication. The practical component icludes essay writing using English patterns of expression with explicit argument and evidence. Issues of plagiarism are also addressed with a focus on improving referencing skills. Students are encouraged to contribute to class and small group discussions. There is a secondary focus on understanding aspects of intercultural communication and development of the student's competence in this area.
