The unit comprises advanced lectures and training in laboratory skills, communication skills and laboratory safe practice. The advanced lecture topics undertaken will vary from year to year. The topics will normally be in areas of chemistry such as mass spectrometry, synthetic design, NMR, organic chemical mechanism, medicinal chemistry, nanotechnology and organometallic chemistry. Details of the topics offered are available on the university Learning Management System. Students may, with permission of the Course Coordinator, partly replace chemistry components with other components offered by relevant departments. The subject may incorporate teaching and assessment from existing partner subjects up to 40% of assessment as indicated. Partner subjects include BIO5SCS and BIO5SIS.

Special conditions This unit of study represents one semester of a year long program (CHE5TMA and CHE5TMB). Students can commence the program in either first or second semester.
Graduate capabilities & intended learning outcomes
01. Search, analyse and evaluate published and acquired scientific information and communicate this to a scientific audience in written form.
- Students will participate in a variety of workshops and exercises on database searching, Endnote, critical analysis, synthesising and evaluating scientific information as well as workshops on scientific writing (of a literature review and research paper). Through exercises students will practice their skills. Feedback provided on the literature review can be used when writing up the final thesis.
02. Present and discuss research information to/with a scientific audience using effective oral communication skills.
- Students will receive a workshop on how to give an interesting and informative presentation and practice their skills in a classroom setting.
03. Apply advanced concepts of discipline-specific knowledge to the solution of scientific problems
- Students will attend classes and workshops on advanced concepts of Chemistry, wher they will discover new areas of the discipline as well as learn to apply the fundamental knowledge to explore uncharted territories through examples of ongoing research projects.
04. Analyze and represent acquired scientific data in a graphical form as well as in scientific narrative
- Students will attend classes and workshops on image processing, spectrum analysis and datamining techniques, learning the use of the most common data processing softwares. Through exercise students will practice the creation of publication-quality graphs, diagrams and images.
05. Identify and control hazardous situations in a chemistry laboratory environment
- Students will attend lectures and participate in workshops about identifying and assessing the risks at a workplace in general, and in relation to the Chemistry discipline. OHSE regulations and the requirements towards risk assessment and risk control will be learned and practiced through examples.
