Subject outline

The subject New Documentary 1 investigates contemporary modes of photographic practice that engage with theoretical and technical aspects that expand on the traditions of investigative visual culture. The subject takes in to account new technologies and modes in which they are used for documentary projects. Importantly, New Documentary focuses on mediums that reflect and best convey visual stories. The assignments equip students with technical and conceptual methodologies to engage contemporary issues # be they small and personal or large-scale worldwide discussions # through varying lens-based techniques. The subject is formatted to have a cross-campus itinerary that expands on student engagement with place and community in a globalised context. New Documentary 1 is taken in first semester of second year studies and across the semester assignments are associated with narrative and topographic photographic methodologies.
