PHOTOGRAPHY: THE CONSTRUCTED IMAGE 1

VPA2CI1

2015

Credit points: 30

Subject outline

Photography has a rich history of imagery made in the studio, and there is a vital diversity in current photographic practice. The Constructed Image 1 explores the use of controllable space as a physical site for photographic image making. Learning to control the formal or improvised space of photography provides part of the conceptual framework for the application of specialised lighting and shooting techniques. Theoretical research is undertaken to investigate the nature of meaning and representation in imagery that proposes, at minimum, a mediated reality. Creation of digital, analogue and hybrid modes are presented via practical assignments and the submission of a folio of photographic artwork. Students are encouraged to participate in regular group gallery visits to Melbourne to reflect on how their work is contextualised in the contemporary art field. A DSLR camera is required. This subject is a pre-requisite for VPA2-CI2.
