Subject outline
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Paramedic Practice and Bachelor of Public Health Promotion program are required to undertake clinical placements in an ambulance service setting. In this subject, students will have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision. They will explore the role of the paramedic as a clinician and build on the model of paramedic clinical competence in the context of paramedic clinical practice. While on clinical placement, students will have the opportunity to practice and develop their clinical skills in the management of patients with acute health conditions in a supervised clinical environment. Skills to be practised include communication and scene management, and procedures associated with airway, breathing, circulation, posture and patient assessment.

01. Use relevant theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to decide on, and justify, the care you provide to patients while supervised in an emergency ambulance service setting. You will be able to (a) undertake paramedic clinical tasks and techniques in a supervised emergency ambulance service setting; (b) determine and describe an appropriate paramedic response to a patient's real life emergency situation; (c)competently integrate theory and practice to provide care to patients in an emergency situation while being supervised.

02. Perform as an effective and responsible team member and work, under supervision, with other paramedic and health care professionals to provide appropriate patient care. You will be able to (a) describe the operational setting for paramedics in the community and the emergency health system; (b) apply independent work and team skills in an integrated manner in a variety of situations and teams in a workplace setting; (c) perform an effective patient handover to and from related emergency services and primary health care teams.

03. Recognise and perform your role and responsibilities in a supervised emergency clinical setting. You will be able to (a) describe and discuss statutes, legislation and public policies that guide clinical practice for a paramedic; (b) determine the social and ethical principles and standards of practice in use in an emergency clinical setting, by evaluating personal and organisational characteristics and strategies; (c) display professional demeanours and leadership capabilities required of a beginning paramedic; (d) identify and apply a culturally sensitive approach to your own reactions, and to those of patients and their families, to acute illness or injury experienced in an emergency clinical setting.

04. Assimilate information and communicate it clearly as appropriate for the emergency ambulance services setting. You will be able to: (a) use a range of communication technologies and media in an integrated manner; (b) interpret complex information into an appropriate mode to inform others with specific needs and context; (c) use contextually sensitive written and oral skills to engage others in effective communication; (d) develop and present concise and thorough explanations that are relevant and appropriately targeted for patients or colleagues as needed.

05. Critically reflect on and review your clinical practice to determine, and put in place, strategies for improvement. You will be able to: (a) maintain a reflective journal during your clinical paramedic practice; (b) identify suitable resources and learning experiences to maintain your learning needs relevant to the emergency health service clinical environment; (c) negotiate opportunities to undertake learning experiences within the clinical setting.
