Subject outline
This is an advanced subject that will help you identify the clinical perspectives of therapeutic medication management. Over twelve weeks you will work in small class sizes both online and in practice. You will incorporate the Quality Use of Medications and the Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice, looking at the ethics, principles and sociopolitical implications of medication use for patients, ranging from neonatal through to aged care, and from a range of cultural perspectives. You will explore the pharmacological characteristics and specific nuances of drugs to optimise therapeutic effects & minimise adverse events with an emphasis on individualised medication management plans. Your learning will be assessed through a presentation, in class exams and performance in practice.

01. Apply advanced practice nursing knowledge, skills &/or equipment/technology to conduct a comprehensive and systematic medication assessment for a patient specific to your clinical practice in regards to pharmacological intervention.

02. Judge and develop plans in response to scenarios, based on assessment, review and analysis of relevant and substantial information within your speciality practice area.

03. Critically analyse current knowledge, and apply clinical reasoning skills to plan and deliver medication education to patient / significant others in their clinical practice using a systematic approach and incorporate a working knowledge of the individual influences of medication adherence.

04. Define risk communication (Risk Vs Benefit) in regards to medication prescription and use and have a working knowledge of role of the health professional within the Quality Use of Medications (QUM) guidelines.

05. Demonstrate clinical leadership in practice development, work as an effective team member in a variety of situations within your speciality nursing environment, and as part of the multidisciplinary health care team.
