Subject outline
In this subject we will focus on the analysis of language above the sentence level and will explore the core concepts and methods of Discourse Analysis. Particular themes include: discourse organisation, ethnography of communication, identity and subjectivity, and power and ideology. By the completion of the subject, students will be able to conduct discourse analysis on a text with reference to its linguistic structures and make the theoretical stance informing the analysis explicit in the discussion. Students will develop skills in a range of techniques associated with different approaches to discourse analysis. Each seminar session will involve discussion and practical analysis using materials such as: newspaper articles, legal documents, transcripts of conversations, interviews and narratives, novels, advertising, government forms.

Prerequisites Must have passed 15 credit points at any level from Linguistics, or must have passed 30 credit points of any Faculty and Humanities and Social Sciences subject. All other students require Coordinator's approval.
